Noodles, Noise and a Vulnerable Voice

Argument over ambience…
Fred: Noodles? Kyushu Ramen, big, cheerful place.
Carl: Hmm. Loud? My hearing’s not what it used to be, and I have to raise my voice. How about Midnight Diner? Shinya’s noodles are good.
Fred: But don’t you miss the energy of a buzzing restaurant?
Carl: Maybe when I was younger. Now, I prefer restaurants where people don’t have to shout just to place an order.
Fred: Okay. But doesn’t you ever feel it gets too quiet in a place like Shinya’s?
Carl: Nope. It’s less stress hearing the person across the table and tasting my food instead of trying to ignore boisterous braying and bellowing.
Fred: Fine. Let’s go to your quiet noodle place. If we find it too quiet, I can hum a tune.

Voice-over
Croakiness creeps into the vocal box with age. Carl could benefit from some voice therapy. Like vocal training exercises such as humming and breathing, treatment like diet and hydration, environmental factors like stress and sleep.

Toad Hall Café

At a roadside café…

Gina: Some healthy-looking dishes. But why call it Toad Hall?

Natalie: Recalls The Wind in the Willows.

Gina: I read it as a kid. But why an eatery?

Natalie: Probably for its whimsical and playful connotations, rather than any direct association with Toad. I mean, he’s looks cute up there, right?

Gina: In the book Toad was a recklessness, arrogant, and impulsive character. A kind of caricature of the wealthy upper class of England.

Natalie: Agreed. He steals cars, drives recklessly, and even ends up in jail.

Gina: There are people who do that today. Go further in fact. Use the car to ram raid shops. Better order.

Natalie: Think I’ll go for Toad’s recommendation: Smashed Pumpkin.

Voice-over

Toad is a character foil to his responsible friends, Ratty, Mole and Badger. Symbolically he can represent the human struggle between impulse and responsibility. His character arc involves learning lessons about the consequences of his actions and growing as an individual. As part of growing, people learn to balance their desires and responsibilities in life.

At The Boatshed

Looking out on the harbor…

Rosalind: Waterfront dining is so charming. What do you think about the architectural features of this Boatshed?

Benedict: The design exploits metaphors. The exposed wooden beams on the ceiling. They give the place a rustic and nautical feel, don't you think?

Rosalind: Hmm. Feels like we're on a ship.

Benedict: And large windows to maximize the water view and connect diners with the surroundings.

Rosalind: I also love these hanging pendant lights. They look like vintage ship lanterns, adding to the maritime theme.

Benedict: And warm yellow lighting, yes. And see these distressed wooden tables and chairs? They give the place an old-world, cozy vibe.

Rosalind: Cozy indeed. It's like having dinner on a boat.

Voice-over

Restaurants are not just about the food; it's also about the ambience and the experience. Architecture plays a big part in that.
