Monocultures: Fuki and sakura

Fuki
Differing ecological attitudes…

Vivienne: You mowed down all the fuki.

Valerie: They’re an invasive species. Take over everywhere.

Vivienne: You can cook them.

Valerie: Well, the rhizomes are still in the ground. So they’re going to spring up again. Speaking of spring, look at the sakura. Beautiful.

Vivienne: Argh. Sakura. Everywhere. They dominate. Look, the council cut down a persimmon I planted on the riverbank because it was supposed to be only sakura.

Valerie: But they’re ornamental and not invasive like fuki.

Yes, there is a difference between cultivated monoculture and invasive monoculture. Still, diversity is preferred over domination by one species.

Cycling to the Hospital

Seeking advice…

Eddie: You’ve taken the train into town recently. Was it crowded?

Louis: A bit. And that was at 10:30. Off peak.

Eddie: So that’s why you bicycle everywhere now.

Louis: You get used to it. It’s only 20 kilometers to town. An hour and a half.

Eddie: I can do that.

Louis: When do you need to be there?

Eddie: Hospital checkup at 9 am.

Louis: Early start.

Eddie: Yes. Maybe 6:30. So I’ll need a new light and a seat.

Louis: Cheaper than driving and paying for parking. And think of your carbon footprint.

Preparing the bicycle brought pleasant ecological surprises. A gel seat cover and a light that can be recharged by USB.

Antarctica Experience: Technique outdoes narration

After viewing a VR immersive film...
.
Robert: It certainly felt as if you were there, right there, in Antarctica.
.
Roald: And moving your head around, seeing a penguin come up behind you.
Come here often?
.
Robert: A stunning film. But what impression did it leave you with?
.
Roald: Um, well, like I had actually been there.
.
Robert: Yes, aside from flying by helicopter and hearing people who work there telling us this is the cafeteria and the meals are great, and I can’t talk loudly or I’ll disturb the penguins. Was there a theme?
.
Roald: Research into climate change by drilling down into the ice for core samples.
.
Robert: But was there a story?
.
Roald: Well, in a 22 minute film you can’t do much more than say CO2 levels have risen to double the amount they have ever been in recorded history. Maybe Al Gore’s use of a ladder was more dramatic, even if it lead to climategate.

Some films get carried away with technology, like 3D or VR. Maybe there aren’t enough human resources or budget left to hire a scriptwriter. You could almost hear the director saying to the people, “Look at the camera and when the light comes on, say something. Like what is your job about.” Or “Here comes a penguin.” How about, “What hours do you work when the sun is up all day?” Or “Do you name any of the penguins?”

Ducks as a snail solution in The Biggest Little Farm

Biodiversity is difficult...
.
Heather: All the leaves disappeared from the lemon trees.
.
Laurel: Try some snail killer.
.
Heather: Isn’t there a biodiversity solution?
.
Laurel: Meaning?
.
Heather: Well, instead of poison baits, can’t we bring in some other animal to eat the snails?
.
Snails, yum!
Laurel: Like ducks?
.
Heather: Mmm. Closest I have is a duck dish I bought in Angoulême.

A 2018 film, The Biggest Little Farm, directed by John Chester during eight years of running an ecological, organic farm on biodiversity principles showed the use of ducks to stop snails from infesting their lemon trees. Good method, good film.

Green Tea Napkin

On an ANA flight...
.
Flight Attendant: Coffee?
.
Passenger: Green tea thanks.
.
Flight Attendant: Sure. Healthy!
.
Passenger: So they say. Do you have shincha or macha?
.
Flight Attendant: Sorry. Only sencha.

Forgot I was in economy. Never mind. Together with the green tea is a napkin made of paper and used green tea leaves. The disposable chopsticks are made from forest thinnings. OK, ANA! Good airline!
