Are traditional watches now necessary?

Analog or digital…

Ken: Are watches necessary now that mobile phones have taken over so many functions like alerts for social media, photos, as well as phone calls? Not to mention telling the time.

Robyn: I guess. Smartphones have many functions, they’re convenient. But watches are often preferred in situations where accessing a phone might be inconvenient or rude, like during meetings or social gatherings. And watches can be fashion statements or collectible items.

Ken: I hear what you are saying about mobile phones not replacing watches. But how about an Apple Watch that looks like a watch, can be a flexible fashion statement and does so much more than a time-keeper?

Robyn: Yeah. Apple changed the game. Combining the traditional appeal of a wristwatch with features like notifications, fitness tracking, communication, an
d health monitoring. Integrating with iPhones.

Ken: And with style. Different watch faces and wrist bands. A flexible accessory. Functions  expanded the genre.

Robyn: Do you know anyone who never used traditional watches but who started wearing Apple Watches?

Ken: Oh yeah. Heaps who wanted their smartphone extended to their wrist. Next it’ll be a chip in the head.

Smartwatches appeal to a younger, tech-savvy demographic who may not have been interested in traditional watches before leading to an increase in adoption among those who may not have previously considered wearing a watch.

Hobbit Town Library Bequest

Hobbit Town Library
Calling home…

ET: I'm in Hobbit Town tonight.

Mothership: Mission accomplished?

ET: I handed over a hundred Green Planet books to the town library.

Mothership: They were appreciated?

ET: Great joy. A harpist played and there was dancing in the fields. Tomorrow I venture further into the local verdure.

Dangers of suggesting changes

A cancelled excursion…

Kazuko: I thought you were going to Nikko to see the fall foliage this weekend.

Hiroshi: That was the plan but I made a silly suggestion at the meeting on Thursday.

Kazuko: You were called out?

Hiroshi: I said why don’t we digitize the new product questionnaire and make it online to save meeting time and paper. The chairman said it was a great idea.

Kazuko: You must have got kudos for that? Save resources, shorten meetings? What’s silly about that?

Hiroshi: But then he said, “With your IT experience, you’re the best for the job. Let’s have this ready by next week.” Well, you know how long it takes to get the bugs out of a new piece of software. There went the weekend trip.

Kazuko: I see. No Nikko. No leaves.

An idea can be given to someone else to suggest. The trick is to get them to be grateful to you for the kudos, while not minding the extra work.

Analogue digital mix

Amid an exchange of abbreviations, Gerhard helps Ned get his car going.

...

Gerhard: Maybe the EST has a bit of H20 in it.

Ned: It’s not a DIS system.

Gerhard: No, this is an oddity, this box on the coil, it does the EST work, then sends the current to a distributor. Here, just hold the DVOM a sec will you?

Ned: Odd, isn’t it. No EFI, but it has ESC.

Gerhard: It was the 80s, they were mixing it. Bits were analogue, bits were digital.

Brevity, through abbreviations, brings engineers closer together.

EST = electronic spark timing

DIS = distributorless ignition system

DVOM = digital volt-ohmmeter

EFI = electronic fuel injection

ESC = electronic spark control
