White June Rabbit Haiku

Butterflies flutter
A leaping rabbit hurdles
Purple irises

June heralds the coming of summer.
Meiji Jingu, with its feet-wetted water irises, a gratifying diversion in mid-June, before the heat of July engulfs us.

Bloom where you are planted

Lady of the Lake…
.

Naia: The quintessence of a Japanese spring. Sakura blooming, a spray of petals on the water.
.
Thea: Fragile beauty. Even eerie.
.
Naia: The statue or the tree?
.
Thea: Oh, both. They complement each other.

“Bloom where you are planted” (Corinthians, 7:20–24) is good advice. Especially if you are native to a location. Naturally, it helps to be looked after by a gardener and to have an audience in the form of Konohanasakuya-hime (Cherry Goddess) standing by you.

Red spider lily

What’s in a name?
.
Lycoris radiata
.
Nom: It’s a red spider lily. Lycoris radiata. It’s in the amaryllis family.
.
De Bloom: But it doesn't look like an amaryllis. It’s not a big trumpet flower. It looks like a swoopy space invader.
.
Nom: Big family. A lot of variety in the flowers.  Ranging from daffodils to onions and garlic.
.
De Bloom: Garlic?
.
Nom: Amaryllidaceae. In Chinese it’s called mànzhū shā huá (曼珠沙華), in Japanese it’s called higanbana (彼岸花). Loosely meaning, ominous flowers that grow in hell. Connotations with parting and death. Shouldn’t give them as a gift.
___________
Voice-over
Lycoris radiata is a bulbous perennial. The red flowers usually appear before the leaves. Blooms are irregular, stamens sweeping backwards. Bulbs are poisonous, grown around paddy fields and waterways in Japan, keeping rat numbers down.

In Marigold Land, rabbits have a saying; "Everything will be all right in the end. So, if it is not all right, it is not yet the end."

White Rabbit. White Rabbit, White Rabbit.
