The Poetry of Plumbing

Hotel desk
Receptionist: Good evening Mr Lynch! I hope you’re enjoying your stay. Everything alright with your room?
Lynch: Oh, yes, wonderful. I was particularly intrigued by the exposed plumbing below the wash-basin. I was tempted to call it “a poem of plumbing.”
Receptionist:  The pipes are exposed to allow for easy access in case of a sudden leak or any urgent maintenance. This way, there’s no need to tear off walls or panels.
Lynch: Clever. It also adds a design feature to the room while being practical.
Receptionist: Functionality with a bit of artistic flair you might say. Enjoy your stay.

Voice-over
Plumbing, is derived from the Latin “plumbum” for “lead”, which early pipes were made of. Lead being soft is easily shaped. Gradually an awareness of lead poisoning led to copper being used. Which has been replaced by cheaper materials such as stainless steel or PVC.

Are traditional watches now necessary?

Analog or digital…

Ken: Are watches necessary now that mobile phones have taken over so many functions like alerts for social media, photos, as well as phone calls? Not to mention telling the time.

Robyn: I guess. Smartphones have many functions, they’re convenient. But watches are often preferred in situations where accessing a phone might be inconvenient or rude, like during meetings or social gatherings. And watches can be fashion statements or collectible items.

Ken: I hear what you are saying about mobile phones not replacing watches. But how about an Apple Watch that looks like a watch, can be a flexible fashion statement and does so much more than a time-keeper?

Robyn: Yeah. Apple changed the game. Combining the traditional appeal of a wristwatch with features like notifications, fitness tracking, communication, an
d health monitoring. Integrating with iPhones.

Ken: And with style. Different watch faces and wrist bands. A flexible accessory. Functions  expanded the genre.

Robyn: Do you know anyone who never used traditional watches but who started wearing Apple Watches?

Ken: Oh yeah. Heaps who wanted their smartphone extended to their wrist. Next it’ll be a chip in the head.

Smartwatches appeal to a younger, tech-savvy demographic who may not have been interested in traditional watches before leading to an increase in adoption among those who may not have previously considered wearing a watch.

Form and function in motorcycles

Two riders, KTM and BMW, at a café…
KTM: Just saw Tron Legacy. Loved those light cycles. Seen it?
BMW: Saw it. Motorcycle as art?
KTM: Art but fiction.
BMW: How about a nonfiction motorcycle? As art that is.
KTM: Form or function?
BMW: Form.
KTM: Ferrari V4 concept.
BMW: If looks could kill it would. A design like that won’t even turn a corner.
KTM: OK, how about function?
BMW: The Britten? Won some races.
KTM: But, oooh, so lurid. The curves, I don’t know. And it often broke down.
BMW: Guess it only leaves… the Honda Cub. Pure function becomes art. 50 million riders can’t be wrong. But are they… missing … something…?

The objects are not in the café but in the shared experience of the speakers. The expressions “light cycle”, “Ferrari motorcycle”, “Britten” and "Honda 50" ignite the images.
The conversation mimics the decision trajectory of a shopper torn between buying something for its form and finally succumbing to a decision based on function.
