Gaslighting

The lights dim…

Joseph: He spins stories.

Angela: Consummate politician?

Joseph: Worse than that. He manipulates. He puts fear in her mind. He tells her she is…

Angela: In danger?

Joseph: He says that he worries her anxieties are a precursor to her having a nervous breakdown.

Angela: So she should seek help?

Joseph: No, he says. She should only listen to him. Don’t talk to friends or they will laugh at her.

Voice-over

Gaslighting is psychological manipulation in which a person sows seeds of doubt in a targeted individual, making them question their own memory, perception, or sanity. The term "gaslighting" originated from the Patrick Hamilton’s 1938 play "Gas Light". It became a film "Gaslight" in 1940. The story is about a husband who manipulates his wife into doubting her sanity by dimming the gas lights in their home and then denying that the lights are flickering She becomes unstable. Variations include denying things that happened, blaming others, undermining confidence, forgetting things, and, as here, isolating the victim.
