Olympic Games film: Visions of Eight
Telling a story without much footage…
Producer: How do you propose to show this? I mean, you were far away from the scene when it happened.
Director: We got some footage. Faroff, yes. But anyway, here’s what I propose. Noise of helicopters approaching. Photographers with cameras on tripods, standing on a wall, looking at distant buildings.
Director: Terrorist on a balcony. Armed police. We have the footage through telephoto. Chopper sounds.
Producer: Uh huh. Ending?
Director: Finally, the closing ceremony. Eleven empty chairs.
Producer: Ah. For the eleven slain athletes.
Among the eight directors, Schlesinger’s oblique reference is the only one touching on the Israeli athletes' assassinations at the 1972 Munich Olympics in Visions of Eight.
