Christ’s
life in a nutshell
Jesus Christ was born in a
cattle trough 2000 years ago. Three men, believing a Messiah was born, followed
a star to pay homage. Christ worked as a carpenter until he was 30. He then
traveled as an itinerant preacher, inspiring through parables, doing almost
miraculous deeds. Religious leaders grew jealous of his popularity. A disciple,
Judas, betrayed his whereabouts, he was arrested, tried, and crucified. And
died, but came to life after three days and ascended into Heaven.

Themes of Renaissance
paintings depict Christ’s birth (Nativity, Adoration) and the last four years
of his life (Miracles, Betrayal, Trial, Crucifixion, Ascent). These pictures
imprint images of Christ’s birth and last years on popular culture.
Little is known of the years
from Christ’s birth to the age of 30: the time he was a carpenter (or artisan).
Naturally enough, pictures of his life in this period are also rare. An
exception is John Everett Millais' Christ in the House of His Parents in the Pre-Raphaelite style, noted for its realism.
Not surprisingly, the periods for which Christ is famous are portrayed in epic or idealistic manner. His ordinary
life is depicted in a realistic style.

An interesting symmetry: Idealism and Spiritualism, Realism and Secularism. Reminiscent of Conscious mind and having foresight (proactivism) vs Unconscious mind and accepting the inevitable (fatalism).

Yes. a symmetry that verges on epigram. As in "Plans are useless, but planning is essential." (The strategy is to have multiple schemes.)
ReplyDeleteThe Mystical Nativity, a truly idealized painting of the birth of Christ, there's so much in this work. The Virgin Mary, the Christ child, the symbolism of angels and ribbons, influence of fanatical anti-art Savonarola, the beauty and clarity as in Botticelli's Birth of Venus and Primavera, its migration from Firenze to London.

This picture describes the scene Entombment of Christ.
I think it is mysterious picture.I wonder why Michelangelo would draw this scene of entombment.
Yes 014, Ultima Cena (The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci) is a picture filled with symbols as has been recently popularized in the da Vinci Code.
ReplyDeleteAgree with 006 that Christ certainly looks powerful in the Rubens Resurrection painting especially since he is supposed to be recovering from being dead.
And 033, the unfinished Entombment by Michelangelo may have been uncompleted because M. gave back the money he had been advanced from the Church of Sant'Agostino.
